Do I need to make reservations?

We welcome people without reservations, but appreciate a head's up if you know when you'll be in town. In order to keep tours intimate, interactive, and fun, we cap our walking tours around 6 people. In order to assure a space, please call (907) 747-7509 or (612) 741-1591. You can also make reservations by emailing us at sitkasalmontours@sitkawild.org or by filling out the contact for on the "Contact Us" web page.

What do I need to bring?

We receive plenty of rain here in Sitka, and we will spend the majority of our time outside, so we suggest that you dress accordingly. We will have large umbrellas, but there's no substitute for a good rain jacket.  Make sure you're wearing good walking shoes. The walking tour will not be be very strenuous, but it will consist of about a mile long jaunt through hatcheries, streets, boat docks, and harbor ramps that will require comfortable shoes. You should also bring a camera!

Tours cost $20 per person, and we're unable to take credit cards. Cash is preferred, but checks will also work. Sitka has several ATMs throughout the downtown area for your convenience.

When and where do tours take place?

All of our tours leave at 1pm from the Sitka Sound Science Center, on Lincoln Street and just past Sheldon Jackson Campus. Throughout the summer we will be offering additional specialized tours including one of a processing plant and a kid salmon tour. To find out more about our regular tours or for a schedule of our specialized tours you can give us a call @
(907) 747-7509 or (612) 741-1591 or fill out the form on the "Contact Us" page. We are always excited to tell the story of salmon in Sitka, and we will do our best to accommodate all interested parties.

How long do tours last?

All tours include a guided narration of Tongass salmon's natural and ecological history, hatchery science and technology, North Pacific maritime
history, Alaska fisheries policy and management, and the cultures of
commercial fishers in Sitka. Tours typically last around 2 hours, most of which
will be spent walking through beautiful forested areas, through a salmon
hatchery, and along the docks.

Great Questions and Follow-up from our Tours!

Our tour guests have keen minds and are as excited about understanding Tongass salmon as we are. From time to time, they ask questions that we prefer to refer to our various salmon experts throughout town, rather than hazard a guess. We post those answers here, for all of us to learn from! Once you take a Sitka Salmon Tour, you'll be hooked. Feel free to email us with additional questions, too, that you think once home!
