Sitka Salmon Tours Mission

Picture
At Sitka Salmon Tours we combine research, education, and outreach to raise awareness about Southeast Alaska's sustainable, wild salmon fishery.

Research

Sitka Salmon Tours employees are doing innovative and original research involving Southeast Alaska's commercial fishery. During the summer of 2011, Helen and Elizabeth helped Nic examine the ways in which the emergence of the concept of sustainability in the 1980s affected the production and consumption of salmon. Elizabeth is continuing her research into the meaningful ways fishermen have stimulated the development of the sustainable salmon fishery Alaska has today.

This summer, Nic and Elizabeth will be speaking at the Kettleson Memorial Library in Sitka, sharing some of their research.
Talks are free and open to the public.

Sunday, July 15 at 5pm. "The Rise and Fall of Canned Salmon," with Nic.

Sunday, August 5 at 5pm. "Fishing for Change," with Elizabeth.

Education

Although we certainly hope you find our tours fun--and we suspect you will--we at
Salmon Tours take our jobs as educators seriously. During our time together, we'll tell the
story of salmon and commercial fishing in Sitka not just because we hope to entertain you
but also because we see value in helping people understand and appreciate where their food comes
from. At Salmon Tours, we incorporate our own research into our tours, meaning
that guests enjoy up-to-date information about the fishery. By establishing a place where
researchers can interact directly with the public, we see ourselves as engaging in a unique
form of intellectual entrepreneurship and applied research.

This summer, we're excited to partner with the National Parks Service on educational programming during the Sitka Music Festival Music in the Park Solstice Celebration, featuring an "Salmon in the Trees" art installation. We'll see you at noon on June 20th in Sitka National Historical Park!

Salmon tours for kids, processor tours, and local foods tours in planning to delight locals and visitors alike in 2012!

Outreach

We want to raise awareness about our world-class, sustainable fishery here in Southeast, Alaska. Part of our outreach is simply telling you the story of the fishery. Another part of our outreach strategy is to participate fully in the community life of Sitka. Whether we're sponsoring salmon bakes or running special community programs, we believe that success begins with strong community support. We also realize that policy is a key element in keeping our fishery ecologically sound and economically healthy. At Salmon Tours, our advocacy centers on making sure our political representatives are protecting the ecological, commercial, and cultural integrity of our fishery.

This spring, Helen and Nic worked throughout the Midwest to collect letters supporting Tongass salmon. Read local fisherwomen Tele's blog, Hooked, about the greater effort to encourage the forest service to prioritize the salmon in its policies!

This summer's Salmon Bake Fundraiser will take place on Thursday, July 19th at Harrigan
Centennial Hall. Tickets cost $20 per person.
The menu is still in planning stages, but rhubarb crisp featuring local rhubarb will be
            our dessert!
